Bluebonnet is the name of several kinds of flowers with mostly bright blue blossoms shaped like tiny bonnets. Scientists have also found and developed bluebonnets with white, pink, and red flowers. Depending on the species (kind), bluebonnet plants range from just 2 inches (5 centimeters) to more than 3 feet (90 centimeters) high. Bluebonnets are wild prairie flowers. Texas chose the bluebonnet as its state flower.
Most species of bluebonnets are annual or biennial plants, which live only one or two growing seasons, respectively. During the summer, the bluebonnet drops seeds from which the next year’s plants grow. The name bluebonnet is sometimes given to other, unrelated plants with blue blossoms. For example, the cornflower is sometimes called the bluebonnet.
