Booker T. Washington National Monument is a tribute to Washington near Roanoke, Virginia. Booker T. Washington was an African American educator and reformer in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The national monument was established in 1956. The monument includes the site of the plantation on which Washington was born into slavery in 1856.
