The peninsula was named for Sir Felix Booth. Booth financed the expedition of Sir John Ross and his nephew, Sir James Clark Ross, in 1829-1833. Sir James Clark Ross discovered the north magnetic pole on the peninsula. The magnetic pole, which moves as Earth’s magnetic field changes, later moved off the peninsula. The Hudson’s Bay Company established the community of Spence Bay on the Boothia Isthmus in 1948. Today, it is an Inuit community called Taloyoak.
