British Medical Association (BMA) is a voluntary professional association of doctors. It was founded in 1832 as the Provincial Medical and Surgical Association. Its goal is to promote the medical and allied sciences and to maintain the honor and interests of the medical profession. Most practicing doctors in the United Kingdom are members of the BMA. The BMA is a registered trade union. It has several standing committees that represent and negotiate on behalf of doctors in different areas of medicine. The BMJ Publishing Group, a subsidiary of the BMA, publishes the BMJ (British Medical Journal) and several other medical and scientific journals in the United Kingdom and worldwide.
