Bromwich, John (1918-1999), was one of Australia’s finest tennis players and one of the greatest doubles players in the history of the sport. Bromwich won the Australian Open singles championship in 1939 and 1946, as well as many state championships. Bromwich played on the Australian team in seven Davis Cup competitions in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1946, 1947, 1949, and 1950. He won the Wimbledon doubles championship twice—in 1948, with Frank Sedgman, and in 1950, with Adrian Quist.
Bromwich and Quist were among the most successful doubles teams in tennis history. They won the Australian Open doubles title eight straight times. Bromwich also won the United States Open doubles title in 1939, 1949, and 1950. He won the Australian mixed doubles championship in 1938, the Wimbledon mixed doubles title in 1947 and 1948, and the U.S. Open mixed title in 1947.
John Edward Bromwich was born on Nov. 14, 1918, in Kongarah in New South Wales, Australia. He died on Oct. 21, 1999.
