Brookes, Sir Norman

Brookes, Sir Norman (1877-1968), was a famous Australian tennis player and administrator. Brookes won the Wimbledon men’s singles championship in 1907 and 1914. He won the Australian Open men’s singles title in 1911. Brookes was a noted doubles player, winning the men’s doubles at Wimbledon in 1907 and 1914, at the United States Open in 1919, and at the Australian Open in 1924. From 1905 to 1920, Brookes played on nine Davis Cup teams. From 1926 to 1955, he was president of the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia.

Norman Everard Brookes was born on Nov. 14, 1877, in Melbourne. He was knighted in 1939. Brookes died on Sept. 28, 1968.
