Brydone, Thomas

Brydone, Thomas (1837-1904), founded New Zealand’s frozen-meat export industry. In 1882, he was the first person to ship frozen meat from New Zealand to the United Kingdom. Brydone was born in Scotland. He settled in New Zealand in the 1860’s. He established the Burnside freezing works in Otago, on the South Island of New Zealand. Brydone, an agricultural pioneer, advocated the use of lime and chemical fertilizers to prepare the soil on farms. Brydone died on June 17, 1904.
