Buccaneer Archipelago is a group of islands that lies at the entrance to Yampi Sound, on the northwestern coast of Western Australia. The group consists of Byron, Cockatoo, Gibbings, Irving, and Macleay islands. Strong riptides make the area around the islands dangerous for shipping. The Dutch navigator Abel Tasman charted the archipelago in 1644. In 1821, Captain Phillip Parker King named the group of islands in honor of the English pirate William Dampier.
