Bugbane is a group of tall plants with large, broad leaves divided into many leaflets. Several species (kinds) of bugbane exist. Bugbane plants have clusters of small white flowers. They are perennials (plants that live more than two growing seasons). They grow in temperate regions, which have hot summers and cool or cold winters. The name originally referred to a kind of bugbane from Asia and eastern Europe. This plant has an unpleasant odor. People used its roots and leaves for medicine and to repel bugs and other insects.
