Butler, Josephine (1828-1906), a British social reformer, vigorously opposed the white slave trade and the exploitation of women. From 1869 onward, she helped lead campaigns in various countries against vice, prostitution, and unfair legislation. Josephine Elizabeth Grey was born on April 13, 1828, in Millfield Hill, Northumberland, England. In 1852, she married George Butler, a teacher and Anglican priest. She died on Dec. 30, 1906.
