Buvelot, Louis, << bihv loh, lwee >> (1814-1888), is considered the founder of Australian landscape painting. Buvelot painted in an Impressionistic style that brought a new emotion and lyricism to Australian landscape painting. His sunny and peaceful scenes in both oil and water color later influenced the group of Australian landscape painters known as the Heidelberg School. This group worked from 1886 to about 1900 in the village of Heidelberg, now a suburb of Melbourne.
Abraham Louis Buvelot was born on March 3, 1814, in Morges, Switzerland. He studied art in Switzerland and Paris and worked as an artist for 18 years in Brazil before returning to Switzerland in 1852. He immigrated to Victoria, Australia, in 1865 and set up business in Melbourne as a photographer for a year. By 1869, Buvelot was a recognized and admired painter in Australia. He died on May 30, 1888.
