Cabrillo National Monument

Cabrillo, << kuh BRIHL oh or kah BREE yoh, >> National Monument, in California, honors the Portuguese-born explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, who served Spain. Cabrillo sailed into San Diego Bay on Sept. 28, 1542, and claimed for Spain the west coast of what became the United States. The monument was established in 1913. It became a part of the National Park Service in 1933. A statue of Cabrillo was dedicated at the site in 1949. For area, see National Park System (table: National monuments) .
