California Institute of Technology is a private university in Pasadena, California. The institute, often called Caltech, was founded in 1891. It operates the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the Seismological Laboratory, the Kerckhoff Marine Laboratory in Corona del Mar, the Palomar Observatory near San Diego, and the Owens Valley Radio Observatory near Bishop. In addition, Caltech and the University of California operate the W. M. Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, a volcano on the island of Hawaii.
