Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Radio-Canada (CBC/Radio-Canada)

Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Radio-Canada (CBC/Radio-Canada) is the national public broadcasting service in Canada. CBC/Radio-Canada delivers a wide range of radio, television, Internet, mobile, and satellite-based services and produces information, general interest, special interest, music, and cultural programs in English and in French. It owns nearly 100 television and radio stations and supplies programming to a number of affiliate stations. CBC/Radio-Canada owns about 30 digital television and nearly 700 radio rebroadcasters (low-power stations that receive and retransmit radio or television signals).

CBC/Radio-Canada operates four Canada-wide radio networks, two of which broadcast in English and the other two, in French. Through the corporation’s websites—www.cbc.ca, www.radio-canada.ca, www.tou.tv, www.espace.mu, and www.music.cbc.ca—Internet users have access to CBC and Radio-Canada television and radio broadcasts, as well as original online audio and audiovisual programs. CBC/Radio-Canada furnishes special radio and television services to northern Canada in English, French, and eight aboriginal (native) languages. Radio Canada International, a radio service of CBC/Radio-Canada, is accessible in five languages over the Internet via www.rcinet.ca. CBC/Radio-Canada is also part-owner of the satellite radio service Sirius XM Canada, which delivers more than 120 channels, including more than 70 commercial-free music channels. In addition, CBC/Radio-Canada provides six Canadian-produced channels to both Sirius XM Canada and its United States counterpart, Sirius XM.

CBC/Radio-Canada operates two main television networks. One broadcasts in English, and the other, in French. CBC/Radio-Canada also operates two cable television news networks and three other specialty services (television channels only available through a subscription to cable or satellite).

The Canadian government finances the majority of the corporation’s operations, including programming. Other funds come primarily from television advertising and revenue from specialty services. Parliament created the CBC in 1936. Its headquarters are in Ottawa, Ontario.
