Cannizzaro, Stanislao, << `KAN` uh ZAH roh or `KAHN` need DZAH roh, `STAH` neez LAH oh >> (1826-1910), was an Italian chemist who helped define important chemical principles. In 1858, Cannizzaro proposed that measurable amounts of gases could be used to determine the weight of molecules or atoms in those gases. This development led to a unified understanding of the composition of chemical compounds and the use of standard chemical formulas. Cannizzaro was born in Palermo, Sicily.
