Canyon de Chelly << duh SHAY, >> National Monument is in northeastern Arizona. It features huge, colorful, steep-walled canyons. The canyons once sheltered American Indians called the Ancestral Pueblo or Anasazi, the ancestors of the present-day Pueblo Indians. Many ruins from the Ancestral Pueblo remain nestled below towering cliffs or perched on high ledges. Navajo homes are scattered along the canyon floors. The monument was established in 1931.
