Carlile, Forbes

Carlile, Forbes (1921-2016), an Australian swimming coach, trained nine swimmers who held world records. They included Judy Joy Davies, John Davies, Terry Gathercole, Karen Moras, Shane Gould, and Jenny Turrall.

Carlile was born on June 3, 1921, in Melbourne. He was educated at the University of Sydney, where he became a lecturer in physiology from 1947 to 1955. Carlile was a professional swimming coach from 1955 to 1985. He represented Australia as its first competitor in the modern pentathlon in the Olympic Games at Helsinki in 1952. He was the Australian Olympic swimming coach in 1948 and again in 1956. Carlile also served as the national swimming coach for the Netherlands from 1962 to 1964. He became director of the Australian Swimming Coaching Association in 1974 and was made a life member of the association in 1984. He died on Aug. 2, 2016.
