Carlile, Wilson (1847-1942), an English clergyman, founded the Church Army, a religious and charitable organization organized on a military pattern. Carlile was born on Jan. 14, 1847, at Brixton, south London. He was ordained in the Church of England in 1880 after retiring from a successful career in business. Two years later, he founded the Church Army to bring the teaching of the Church of England to people living in the slums of Westminster, in London. The army’s activities grew, and Carlile administered them as chief secretary until shortly before he died on Sept. 26, 1942.
