Carlisle (pop. 110,024) is a city and local government area in Cumbria, England. It is the administrative center of the county. The city lies on the River Eden, about 9 miles (15 kilometers) from the Scottish border. Carlisle lies in the center of an important farming district. Its industries include food processing and manufacturing metal goods and textiles. Carlisle has a Norman castle that dates from the 1100’s and a cathedral that also dates from Norman times. Carlisle was once a walled town.
