Caulfield Cup

Caulfield Cup is one of Australia’s major horse-racing events. It is run over 2,400 meters (1.5 miles) on a grass track at the Caulfield race course in Melbourne every year in October. The Melbourne Racing Club supervises the race. The field is limited to 18 horses. The Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup together make up the Melbourne Spring Double.

The Caulfield Cup began in 1879. In 1885, the event attracted 41 competitors, and a record crowd of 20,000 saw 16 horses fall in a spectacular crash. In 1909, two horses, Blue Book and Aborigine, finished first in a dead heat.
