Charles I (1887-1922) was the last emperor of Austria and king of Hungary. He was born on Aug. 17, 1887, at Persenbeug Castle, in Austria. In 1916, during World War I (1914-1918), he succeeded to the throne upon the death of his great-uncle, Franz Joseph. Charles secretly tried to make a separate peace between Austria-Hungary and the Allies in 1917. After his country was defeated, he went into exile in Switzerland. He later made two unsuccessful attempts to regain the throne of Hungary. Charles was finally sent with his family to the island of Madeira, where he died on April 1, 1922.
