Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park lies between Washington, D.C., and Cumberland, Maryland. A small section is in West Virginia. It was established as a national monument in 1961 and as a national historical park in 1971. It includes one of the oldest lock canals in the United States for mule-drawn boats. Completed in 1850, the canal was used until 1924. See National Park System (table: National historical parks) .
