Childe, Gordon

Childe, Gordon (1892-1957), an Australian-born archaeologist, made important discoveries of prehistoric European artifacts. He worked out important methods of interpreting his discoveries. These methods showed the changing social life of early societies over time. Childe’s 300 publications include The Dawn of Civilization (1925), on the origins of civilization, and Piecing Together The Past (1954), on methods of interpreting artifacts.

Vere Gordon Childe was born in Sydney on April 14, 1892. He died on Oct. 19, 1957.
