Chow chow, commonly called chow, is one of the oldest breeds of dogs. It originally was bred in China about 150 B.C. The chow may have long or short hair. Its coat is solid black, blue, red, cinnamon, or cream, with lighter shadings underneath, on its tail, and on its legs. The chow is medium-sized with a sturdy build. Its blue-black tongue is remarkable among dogs. Chows are strong, active, and intelligent.
