Chuckwalla is the name of several kinds of large, harmless lizards found in rocky deserts of the United States and Mexico. The largest species grows to about 2 feet (61 centimeters) long and weighs about 2 pounds (0.9 kilogram). Chuckwallas live up to 25 years. They feed on leaves and flowers. Most other lizards eat insects. When chased by an enemy, a chuckwalla will run to a crack in a rock or some other narrow opening and wedge itself in tightly by filling its lungs with air.
