Churchill River

Churchill River is in Saskatchewan and Manitoba in western Canada. Almost 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) long, the river flows east from Lac la Loche in northwestern Saskatchewan and empties into Hudson Bay. The river’s mouth is almost entirely surrounded by land. This gives the town of Churchill, Manitoba, the best natural harbor on Hudson Bay. The Danish explorer Jens Munk discovered the river in 1619. The river later was named for John Churchill, the third governor of the Hudson’s Bay Company and later the Duke of Marlborough.
