Civics

Civics is the study of the rights and responsibilities of citizens. Civics was taught in ancient Greece and by the philosopher Confucius in China. Many middle schools and junior and senior high schools offer courses in civics, which is also sometimes known as “education of citizens.” Civics students in the United States and many other countries learn about such subjects as democracy, freedom, and individual rights. They study the structure, function, and problems of government on the local, state, national, and international levels. The students also learn about other economic, political, and social institutions.

Civics teachers encourage students to participate in student government, school publications, and other school organizations. Students may also become involved in such community programs as voter registration drives and conservation projects.
