Cockfield, Lord (1916-2007), was a British politician and a Conservative Party life peer. He served as a vice president of the European Community Commission from 1985 to 1988. He was also the United Kingdom’s secretary of state for trade from 1982 to 1983 and chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1983 and 1984.
Francis Arthur Cockfield was born on Sept. 28, 1916, in Dover, Kent, England. He studied law at the London School of Economics. In 1938, he joined the Inland Revenue, the United Kingdom’s tax-collecting service. Cockfield served as chairman of the Price Commission from 1973 to 1977. He was knighted in 1973 and made a baron in 1978. Lord Cockfield died on Jan. 8, 2007.
