Cody, John Patrick

Cody, << KOH dee, >> John Patrick (1907-1982), was archbishop of Chicago from 1965 until his death in 1982. Pope Paul VI appointed him a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church in 1967. Cardinal Cody won recognition as a church administrator while archbishop of New Orleans and Chicago. However, his last years in Chicago were marked by controversy over accusations that he dealt harshly with local clergy, Catholic educators and teachers, and Catholic laypersons (people outside the clergy).

Cardinal Cody was born on Dec. 24, 1907, in St. Louis. He was ordained a priest in 1931 in Rome, where he received doctorates in philosophy and theology. Cardinal Cody served for five years on the staff of the Vatican secretary of state in the 1930’s. He was appointed archbishop of New Orleans in 1964 and archbishop of Chicago in 1965. He died on April 25, 1982.
