Columbia University

Columbia University is a privately endowed university in upper Manhattan. Its full name is Columbia University in the City of New York. Columbia is a leading university in liberal arts and professional studies.

Affiliated institutions.

Two colleges in New York City are affiliated with Columbia University. Barnard College was established by the trustees of Columbia University as an undergraduate school for women. It was founded in 1889 and awarded its first bachelor’s degrees in 1893. Barnard is still a women’s college, but its students now attend classes at Columbia and receive degrees from the university.

Teachers College is a graduate school of education. Its programs lead to master’s and doctor’s degrees. Teachers College was established in 1887 and became part of Columbia University in 1893. See Teachers College, Columbia University.

Union Theological Seminary and the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York City are affiliated with Columbia University. For musically gifted students, Columbia has joint programs with the Juilliard School. All of the affiliated institutions have campuses adjacent to Columbia’s campus, except for Juilliard, which is farther south in Manhattan.

Other facilities.

Columbia University operates regional institutes, centers, and programs that offer graduate studies and conduct research in many fields. These fields include applied social research, cancer research, human nutrition, international change, urban and environmental affairs, and war and peace studies. Columbia’s Harriman Institute conducts research and offers studies on former Soviet countries, east-central Europe, and the Balkans.

The university has cooperative programs with many museums, hospitals, libraries, and other institutions in New York City. Columbia’s libraries house a wide variety of books and other resources. The Butler Library has collections of rare books and historical documents.

Two Columbia facilities outside of Manhattan are the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, in Palisades, New York; and Nevis Laboratories, in Irvington, New York. The Lamont-Doherty observatory conducts research in oceanography and geological sciences. Nevis Laboratories is Columbia’s primary center for the study of high-energy particle and nuclear physics.
