Conteh, John

Conteh, John (1951-…), a British boxer, became the World Boxing Council (WBC) version of world champion in the light-heavyweight class in 1974. He won the title by defeating the Argentine boxer Jorge Ahumada. In 1977, the WBC deprived Conteh of his title for refusing to fight another Argentine, Miguel Cuello, in Monaco. Conteh had wanted the fight staged in England.

Conteh was born on May 27, 1951, in Liverpool, England. As an amateur boxer, he won the national middleweight championship in 1970 and the light heavyweight championship in 1971. Conteh turned professional in 1971. In March 1973, he won the European light-heavyweight title. Two months later, he won the British and Commonwealth titles. Conteh gave up all three titles after becoming world champion. He retired in 1980 with a professional record of 34 victories, 4 defeats, and 1 draw.
