Cornplanter (1750?-1836) was a leader of the Native American Seneca people. He supported Britain during the American Revolution (1775-1783). But in the 1780’s and 1790’s, Cornplanter helped prevent the Seneca from fighting in wars between Midwestern Indians and the United States. In 1791, the Pennsylvania legislature rewarded his efforts to keep the Seneca out of the wars by granting him a large area of land on the Allegheny River. The Cornplanter Grant became a major Seneca settlement in 1796. In 1798, Pennsylvania Quakers began teaching Cornplanter and his people how to live like white frontier farmers and herders. He died on Feb. 18, 1836.
