Cotton, Sir Henry (1907-1987), was one of the United Kingdom’s leading professional golfers for more than 20 years. He was British Open champion in 1934, 1937, and 1948. He also won the open championships of Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Germany, and Italy. Cotton was British Ryder Cup captain in 1947 and 1953.
Thomas Henry Cotton was born on Jan. 26, 1907, in Holmes Chapel, Cheshire. He turned professional at the age of 16 and was largely responsible for raising the status of professional golf in the United Kingdom in the early 1900’s. From 1963 until his death, Cotton lived almost exclusively in Portugal. He was awarded a knighthood in 1988, shortly after his death on Dec. 22, 1987.
