Coughlin, << KAWG lihn, >> Charles Edward (1891-1979), was a Canadian-born Roman Catholic priest known for his political activities during the 1930’s. Millions of Americans heard his weekly radio broadcasts and read his newspaper, Social Justice. Coughlin supported anti-Communism, anti-Semitism, isolation in foreign relations, and inflationary economic policies. His admiration for German dictator Adolf Hitler led his bishop to stop Coughlin’s political activities after 1940. Coughlin was a parish priest in Royal Oak, Mich., from 1926 to 1966. He was born on Oct. 25, 1891, in Hamilton, Canada. He died on Oct. 27, 1979.
