Crowfoot (1830-1890), a Blackfoot chief, promoted peaceful relations between his people and whites in what is now southern Alberta, Canada. He also promoted peace between the Blackfoot and other Plains tribes. In the late 1800’s, Crowfoot discouraged the Blackfoot from fighting against whites who settled in their territory. He also supported making a peace treaty with Canada. When the North West Rebellion broke out in 1885 in what is now Saskatchewan, Crowfoot urged the Blackfoot not to take up arms against Canada.
Crowfoot was born in the southern Alberta region. His Blackfoot name was Isapo-muxika. As a young man, Crowfoot was a noted warrior and scout. In 1866, he became head chief of the Blackfeet. Crowfoot settled on a First Nations reserve in 1877. He died on April 25, 1890.
