Curzon, Lord (1859-1925), Marquess of Kedleston, was a British statesman and Conservative Party politician. From 1899 to 1905, he was viceroy (colonial ruler) of India, which was then a colony of the United Kingdom. After returning to England, he became chancellor of Oxford University and worked against the movement to allow women the right to vote. Curzon reentered politics during World War I (1914-1918). He became a member of Prime Minister David Lloyd George’s war Cabinet in 1916. In 1919, he became foreign secretary, but received a setback when Lloyd George’s government fell in 1923. He expected to become prime minister but was passed over in favor of Stanley Baldwin.
George Nathaniel Curzon was born on Jan. 11, 1859, in Kedleston, Derbyshire, England. He died on March 20, 1925.
