Cuthbert, Betty

Cuthbert, Betty (1938-2017), an Australian track star, won four gold medals at Olympic Games. In 1956, at the Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia, Cuthbert won three gold medals. She won the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints and was a member of the women’s team that won the 400-meter relay. From 1956 to 1963, she set world records for distances ranging from 60 meters to 440 yards. A torn muscle in 1960 forced her into two years of inactivity. In 1964, Cuthbert won her fourth gold medal in the 400-meter run at the Tokyo Olympics. She retired after winning this race.

Cuthbert was born on April 20, 1938, in Sydney. She died on Aug. 6, 2017. In 2018, the Australian government made Cuthbert a Companion of the Order of Australia, an award for service to the country or humanity.
