Darling, Sir Ralph (1775-1858), was governor of the British colony of New South Wales, Australia, from 1825 to 1831. He governed the colony firmly, coming into conflict with people of liberal views, such as William Charles Wentworth, a wealthy landowner. Darling helped to establish the legislative council and trial by jury. He also encouraged exploration. Darling was knighted in 1835. He died on April 2, 1858, in Brighton, England.
