Delaware Bay

Delaware Bay is a large inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. It separates New Jersey and Delaware. The deep channel of the bay connects with the Delaware River, enabling oceangoing vessels to reach the ports of Wilmington, Del., and Philadelphia. Delaware Bay is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) long and about 35 miles (56 kilometers) wide at its widest point. The channel is from 30 to 60 feet (9 to 18 meters) deep through its entire length. At Cape Henlopen, near the bay entrance, a breakwater provides shelter for ships. See also Delaware River .
