Dettori, Frankie

Dettori, Frankie (1970-…), is an Italian-born jockey. He became the United Kingdom’s champion jockey in 1994, 1995, and 2004. The award goes to the jockey who rides the most winning horses during a season. Dettori won the 2,000 Guineas four times, the Irish Derby once, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes seven times, and the St. Leger Stakes six times. He won the Ascot Gold Cup nine times. Dettori also won the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, Europe’s richest race, six times. On Sept. 28, 1996, he set an extraordinary record when he rode all seven winners in one day at Ascot racecourse in Berkshire, England, at combined odds of 25,095-1.

Lanfranco Dettori was born on Dec. 15, 1970, in Milan, Italy. His father was Gianfranco Dettori, who won the Italian Jockeys’ Championship 13 times. Dettori became an apprentice jockey in 1985. He rode his first winner in Turin, Italy, in November 1986. Dettori won his first race in the United Kingdom in 1987.
