Dobson, Rosemary

Dobson, Rosemary (1920-2012), was a leading Australian poet. Her work has been praised for its understated wit, its clarity, and its sophisticated comments on life and art. Dobson received a number of literary awards in Australia, including the Patrick White Award for Literature and the Grace Leven Prize for poetry, both in 1984. She shared the 1985 Victorian Premier’s Literary Award for her collection The Three Fate and Other Poems (1984). She won the award again in 2001 for Untold Lives and Later Poems (2000). Editions of her Collected Poems were published in 1991 and 2012.

Dobson was born on June 18, 1920, in Sydney. She was educated at Frensham School in Mittagong and later studied and taught art. She worked for several years in the editorial department of Angus & Robertson, a Sydney publisher. Dobson also wrote books on art and books for children. She died on June 27, 2012.
