Dogbane is a group of poisonous green plants with a milky, bitter juice. These plants are not considered dangerous because most grazing animals dislike the bitter juice and will not eat them. Dogbanes grow primarily in the northern United States and southern Canada.
A common dogbane called the spreading dogbane, or honeybloom, has light-green leaves and clusters of pale pink flowers. This dogbane has a bitter root that doctors sometimes use to cause vomiting. Another dogbane called the Canada hemp, or Indian hemp, has greenish-white flowers that grow in clusters. The bark of this dogbane produces a long, strong white fiber that is used to make nets.
