Doughnut

Doughnut is a round, fried cake with a hole in the center. Dutch settlers brought the fried cake to colonial America. According to legend, Captain Hanson Gregory of the United States invented the doughnut hole in 1847 as a teenager. Gregory supposedly recommended that his mother cut the centers from her fried cakes so they would cook more thoroughly and with less greasiness.
