Trinity College Dublin, << DUHB lihn, >> is Ireland’s oldest university. It was founded in 1592 in Dublin, Ireland, under a charter granted by Queen Elizabeth I of England. The financial support of this college came from funds and property given by King James I. Trinity was originally a school for Protestants, but by the 1790’s, Roman Catholics were admitted. The college first admitted women in 1904. Famous graduates of Trinity College Dublin include the Irish novelist Samuel Beckett; the Irish philosopher George Berkeley; Douglas Hyde, the first president of the Republic of Ireland; and the English author Jonathan Swift. Trinity College is also referred to as the University of Dublin. The name Trinity College is more familiar, however, and Trinity is the only college making up the University of Dublin. The college’s website at https://www.tcd.ie/ offers additional information.
