Düsseldorf was chartered in 1288, though settlements existed there as early as the 700’s. The city experienced growth and wealth throughout most of its history, but it was largely destroyed during World War II (1939-1945). The city was rebuilt, resulting in a mix of modern skyscrapers and reconstructed buildings. Düsseldorf is home to Heinrich Heine University and a celebrated Art Academy. Düsseldorf’s many industries include banking, commerce, and the manufacture of chemicals, iron, and steel.
