East Kilbride is a suburban town in the local government area of South Lanarkshire, Scotland, about 7 miles (11 kilometers) south of Glasgow. East Kilbride was designated a new town in 1947. A new town is a government-planned urban community. It is also an overspill town—a suburb designed to relieve crowding—for Glasgow. Local industries include engineering, textiles, and electronic equipment manufacturing. East Kilbride existed as a rural village long before being recreated as a new town. The Old Parish Church and other buildings date from the 1700’s. See also Glasgow.
