Edward V

Edward V (1470-1483?) succeeded his father, Edward IV, as king of England in April 1483 at the age of 12. But before he was crowned, his father’s brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester, imprisoned Edward and Edward’s younger brother, also named Richard, in the Tower of London. In June, Gloucester took the throne as Richard III. Edward and his brother were probably murdered soon afterward on an order from Richard III. However, there is no proof of murder, and no one knows for certain what happened to the boys. The remains of two children were discovered in the Tower of London in 1674, and some people believe that they may have been those of Edward and his brother.

Edward was born on Nov. 2, 1470, in Westminster (now part of London). He lived most of his short life in the borderlands between England and Wales.
