Eildon Dam

Eildon Dam forms a large storage reservoir on the Goulburn River in northern Victoria, Australia. The earth-and-rock-fill dam rises 277 feet (84.5 meters) high and holds about 2.7 million acre-feet (3.3 billion cubic meters) of water. An acre-foot equals the volume of a square container that is 1 foot (0.3 meter) high and has a base of 1 acre (0.4 hectare) in area. The dam was opened in 1956.

Farms in the area served by the Eildon Dam produce dairy products, fruits, wool, and lambs. Water from the dam is also used to generate hydroelectric power. Lake Eildon is a popular tourist attraction. It has an area of 53 square miles (138 square kilometers) and a shoreline 320 miles (515 kilometers) long. Popular activities at the lake include fishing and water sports.
