Elba, << EHL buh, >> is a mountainous island in the Mediterranean Sea, 6 miles (10 kilometers) southwest of the coast of Tuscany. The French emperor Napoleon I was exiled to Elba in 1814 (see Napoleon I (Exile to Elba)). Elba covers 86 square miles (224 square kilometers), and has a 40-mile (64-kilometer) coastline. It has a population of about 30,000, which increases greatly each summer as tourists arrive to enjoy the beaches and sea breezes. The chief city is Portoferraio. Products include iron, marble, wine, and fruits. Italy governs Elba as part of Livorno province.
