Elliott, Herb

Elliott, Herb (1938-…), an Australian runner, ran a mile in less than 4 minutes 17 times. In 1958, he set a world record by running a mile in 3 minutes 54.5 seconds. Elliott won the 1,500-meter race at the Olympic Games in 1960 in a world record time of 3 minutes 35.6 seconds. He was unbeaten in the mile and 1,500-meter races over his entire career.

Herbert James Elliott was born on Feb. 25, 1938, in Subiaco, near Perth. He retired as a runner in 1962. Elliott served as deputy chairman of the Australian Sports Commission. Beginning in 1976, he spent many years working for an international sportswear company. During the early 2000’s, Elliottt was an executive with several industrial corporations.
